| no partners | | Blake and I'd seen photos of rock art in the Book Cliffs near Green River and decided to check out three of the canyons for ourselves. The drive across the Gunnison Valley was interesting what with the crawl through the slippery mud and the rather large herd of vigilent pronghorn. My attempt to avoid the boot-sucking clay while opening and closing gates must have been amusing for Blake, but he was kind enough not to laugh (at least not while I was in the truck).
We came up dry in the first canyon, but explored an old jeep road that led up into the higher reaches of the Book Cliffs. The second canyon yielded a cube-shaped boulder with some unusual petroglyphs including some big-beaked birds and a human with arms coming out of its head. The third canyon proved to be more substantial with at least 6 different boulders stretched out over 3/4 of a mile. What we couldn't figure out is why so much time would have been spent by the ancient peoples at the two rock art sites that we found. There were no springs nor streams anywhere near the second site and the third site only had a spring that was nearly two more miles up canyon.
We enjoyed the day trying to sort out the meaning of the glyphs and chuckling at the lengths we would go to in order to keep the glue-like mud from adding girth to our boots. We were quite the sight rolling in to Green River and spent the better part of 30 minutes at the car wash. |
