Wondered if the emergency dispatch operator would answer. She did, I gave my permit number, and away I went. Where the Toyota would be parked would be on the permit territory. Where I planned to hike was not.
Road in was great to terrible. Worked the vehicle over and I had to work on the road in a couple of spots. Parked short of an idyllic car camp spot, but just wasn't worth it to traumatize or roll the FJ off an embankment.

Beautiful area, a huge saguaro studded bowl with towering rock faces surrounding, and a few arches. I had been on the other side of the ridge, had not been in on this side driving wise. Set out crossing the bajada. Weaving in and out of the saguaros, blooming brittlebush, and cholla, came upon no fewer than 3 sizable pot shard scatters with chippings thrown in. Since water locations were in line with this area I was not too surprised.

Marched on, I decided I would scramble up on some rocks and ridges and get an overview. It was very cold with the wind and I was freezing. I did not stay on the summits long but got some views but not what I wanted. The sun lowered and went back to the car, bundled up and had a really comfortable night in my 15 degree bag and my good thermals.

I had set my sights on what looked like a doable summit for solo me. I am not a peak bagger, but here it just seemed like the thing to do with the wonderful views. The ridgeline proved a bit technical in spots but I made it up to the flat summit, with the shear rock face falling away on one side. Great views and not windy, but I had a few layers on and kept them on all day. I was in a gray area according to the map, but I decided they were probably not flying or launching missiles today. The skies were quiet.

The way down was tricky and fortunately the rock grippy. I took the boring wash back but that was fast hiking. Upon leaving noted a dusty beater of a dodge pickup with Sinaloa, Mexico plates and some interesting items in the bed of the truck, no one in sight. It was several washes back where there would have been trouble crossing, as it was I was in 4 lo and had the rear locked for those spots.

Drove out and called the operator to let her know I was out, thought about mentioning the truck but didn't. Could have been out enjoying the lonely lovely desert too for all I knew.

Great trip, more areas to see and do there too.
