| no partners | | I had an area I had been to before; wanted to go back, but it wasn't that exciting to be a destination in and of itself. I was to meet Hank and Larry the next day for a hike, but my FJ didn't co-operate and I can't rule out being not too smart on my part.
Sat drove up in the super Fog, rose above it, then down a twisty washed out road and finally parked near a homestead/mine area, only remnants about. Walked the bad road, quad only IMO, for a while. Sort of looking for a mine area, but no tailings in site. I looked down and saw worked chert on the road, then looked around and saw pottery shards eroding out of the road bank. Followed that up a small hill, several types, and some chippings, probably a route.
Back to the hiking, getting nice views. Spoke to a hunter, I had passed my destination. He offered me a ride back down the road, but I wanted the exercise. I beat him to the turn off, he was going over to another pass for a chance at the deer. Another road it is faster to walk than drive.
There were old abandoned side roads not on the map it seemed everywhere. This one took me into a canyon. Again a few vague walls, I walked up the canyon because it had some color with the sycamores. Soon a little stream, and leaf litter, and some great geology. The abandoned place, no one walks here but the animals, maybe a few hunters, a rancher. The canyon nothing to talk about, but very pretty today, with it's splash of color and intriguing rock. The spring not on the map, but issuing from a huge apron of travertine, with little ferns, and quite a good flow in the silty bottom. I scramble up to see the source, from the tall grass, but find nothing at the rock contact.
Back to the car take a big very overgrown road. This seemed like a mining road with it's good grade and width. Very overgrown and a few diversions. I did not go far, if ever motivated I will come back. At the FJ all good although as I headed to pavement it seemed to not want to shift out of 4wd. But did get it to do so and drove to a campsite near Apache Leap area. Next morning major fog and lots of pictures as I drove around and tried to position myself. It came time to meet Hank and Larry, and lo and behold the Toyota did not let me take it out of 4wd. I did the normal of backing up, getting on really soft dirt, making sure I was level so as to not bind up the drivetrain etc.
And now of course the dash is lit up like a christmas tree of warning lights. So time passed, I didn't make the hike, and I finally got it into 2wd and went home. Back to the mechanic. But at least it did get me home. |
