| no partners | | Drove in and the first goal was to take an old Jeep trail to the Gila. Had to park at a locked gate then walked the old mining road. Lined with closed poppies, cloudy so they weren't open. The old road was interesting with a lively willow choked spring in one area and some epic wash outs. Dropped into a large wash that I walked to the river, crossing the AZT along the way. Saw the river and some Jeeps parked across looking at the crossing trying to decide.
Back up the huge wash, then did not take the road but did go up a small slot canyon that was fun and pretty and saw an old homestead with rockwork. Dismal lighting for photos though. Up yet another derelict mine road back to the Toyota. Car camped on down the road, cold night with ice and frost all over the vehicle; had to run the defroster a while before I could see out to drive.
Park before another gate. Down the canyon, a bushwack, but the tiny creek was easily walked in or hopped over. Green green everywhere. A quad track crossing, then into the canyon proper with big walls and nice slickrock. Too short then out to open desert where I turned around.
Some poppies were now blooming so I spent some time with them and crawling on the ground to get the light just right.
Nice weekend, probably did some epic trespassing, really don't care, did not see anyone afoot, and just a few vehicles. |
