Since I am not real familiar with this area I recruited Randy to be my guide on this hike. Nice to have company on the hike and also learned a lot of the names of the peaks that aren't labeled on maps. The Krein Peak or ridge trail is not an official trail in the park but must be heavily used because it was in better condition than most of the other trails I have been on. Nice views from the top in all directions. We headed up the north side of the ridge and went down the south, If I was going to do it again I would do the other direction. The south is steeper and a lot more loose rock so I would rather do it going up than down. Started the hike at the Sarasota Trail Head headed north to the Yetman Trail then almost immediately took the Krein Ridge trail up the ridge. This intersection is not marked but is fairly easy to spot especially if you have a GPS route to tell you when to start looking. Once down from the ridge on the south side we took the Explorer Trail along the east side of Little Cat Peak to Star Pass or Cats Crack and returned to the trail head on the Sarasota trail. Randy also pointed out the different routes up the north side of Cat Mountain. I think I will be doing that peak from the east though not quite as challenging. Nice short 5 mile hike and just what my knees needed after the 19 miler last week. |
