I was to have gone canyoning on this day but the rain the day before made the flow too high plus the forecast had weather in it. So I found myself a good hike to do in the Pyrenees.

Part of the adventure was actually getting to the trailhead. Just leaving the village I was staying in proved to be a challenge due to narrow streets. Let’s just say that I learned how much a side view mirror costs from Budget Rental cars!

Once out of the village I thought I was home free. Nope, turned down a rode that as it progressed up the mountain it continued to get narrower and narrower. Luckily, it was paved to the top. The most challenging part was when the clouds rolled in and I couldn’t see very far in front of me. The road was for travel in both directions but only room for one car! Did I mention the lack of guard rails in most places? The road rose about 3000 ft of elevation as I drove.

I got to the trailhead and I noticed the clouds were moving quickly so I was thinking maybe things would clear so I got started. The first section was uphill in the woods. I was happy when I got to tree line and got some views!

I saw a variety of wildlife and not so wildlife. Saw a marmot, a few Pyrenean chamois, little horses, sheep and cows.

As I traveled above tree line the wind was crazy. The clouds blow over quickly but there were always more behind them. Angry clouds, nice clouds, you name it. I kept wondering if I should turn around but I just kept walking.

I bagged two minor peaks in the area: Cime de Pomarole and Roca Colum. Got views of peaks in France and Spain. Stood on the border of both countries.

On top of Roca Colum another hiker passed me while I was taking pictures. This gave me an assurance that I didn’t need to turn back so I completed the loop I had started to do.

The descent at first was pretty steep following a drainage. Over time it level out but the trail was rocky.

Once I was down I was treated to a tiny village nestled in the hills. Unfortunately it was during the time in which everything is closed so I barely saw any people. From there I had to hike back up to my car to complete the loop.

The drive down the mountain was less scary as the clouds were not socked in. However, I was very happy to have the drive over so I stopped in a walled village to wander around and have glass of wine to celebrate my journey!
