Friday afternoon/evening we hiked up Barnhardt to Chilson Camp, arriving just after dark. Plenty of water in the new spring box. Made good use of the table/bench set up. Windy and clear night on the divide.
Saturday morning we took our time and made the hike over to HCS. Set up as home base for the next two nights. Enough water directly behind camp and a lot more in the pools leading to the canyon. Took a dip in the water and hung out at the cliffs for sunset.
Sunday was a day off to hang around and explore. Loved the pace of this trip. We met two AZT thru-hikers going North to South this time of year. Went back to the cliffs twice, for lunch and sunset, to see different sections. As expected, no flow on the waterfalls this time of year, but still an incredible place either way.
Monday we made good time going mostly downhill back to the car. Met a guy in the parking lot with pack horses coordinating a supply run to Chilson with for an AZT trail crew. That was fortunate for us, because my car wouldn't start, and he gave us a jump. Phew!
All-in-all, I know this is a way more popular spot in the spring because of the waterworks -- but we enjoyed the solitude of this autumn adventure! |
