| no partners | | At a neighborhood music festival last weekend we made a new friend and convinced him to come on his first backpacking trip with us. Six days later he was in the car heading to the trail head...
Day 1 / Friday
Hit the trail from First Water at 5p. Took the loop clockwise on Second Water. Had light until we got to Second Water Canyon. Camped near Second Water Spring, around 3.25 miles from the car. Great spot, but had some mice this time. Hang up your stuff.
Day 2 / Saturday
Packed up in the morning, finished off Second Water and headed south on Boulder Canyon. Took the cairned route up and over the southern Battleship Saddle and down into La Barge Box. Snagged the campsite and filled up at the pools around the bend, which were clear and deep.
Made our way back up to tackle Battleship Mountain. My first time up there. It's intimidating from below and a couple spots as you go are of the "don't look down" variety, at least for me. Ate lunch on the way and half our group went back, while my buddy and I continued on to the summit. Definitely a highlight of the trip.
Around sunset a couple came up La Barge Canyon with their 3 dogs. They ended up camping in the box, just around the bend. Must have found a solid flat spot back there.
Day 3 / Sunday
We decided to loop out by finishing off Boulder Canyon south and taking Dutchman Trail back to the car at First Water. It was a nice and sunny day; I was definitely feeling the Battleship hike from the day before. Sections of Boulder Canyon Trail were a bit grown over; I would recommend long pants.
Estimating around 16 miles for this loop including Battleship. Nice to be able to hang out, camp and make the summit with day packs. Another excellent trip to the Supes! |
