I wonder if it was the heavy snow last winter, but there's a lot of taller stuff that has bowed over into the trail that has to be pushed through. The tread is clear though. It got progressively worse on the climb from Bull Basin up to the saddle, and the entire downhill side south of the saddle to the Haunted Canyon junction was a mess of overgrowth and a lot of catclaw. The initial descent off the saddle has some pretty good water erosion, with several of the water bars completely gone.
The rest of the hike was great. The northern section of Bull Basin is beautiful, as is the lower part of Paradise. In the middle, the trip to Tonys and back is very nice. It was warm in the sun for November and while we had planned for that, we had not anticipated how cold it would be to start. Temps in the 30s made the first couple of miles a real chill.
Stupid amount of bear poop on Bull Basin. The most I've seen on a single trail ever. Several were still warm. No direct sightings though. |
