We ventured into Cochise Stronghold with the idea of exploring one of the canyons in the area. Belinda had been in this particular canyon before so we had some idea of what to expect off trail. But first we hiked up Cochise Stronghold Trail #279 to make our way around to the top of the canyon. We passed Cochise Spring which had plenty of water and with all the snow and rain virtually every drainage was flowing to some degree. We hit snow line just before Cochise divide but nothing too much with only a couple of inches. We also passed Half Moon Tank that was also full before hiking to the Cochise Divide where we then looked for a spot to drop into the canyon for the off trail part of the hike.

We headed down canyon picking our way through brush and looking for rocky pathways over the rough terrain. Eventually we were in the main drainage and following the now flowing canyon. A few patches of snow but fortunately no ice for the rock scrambling that we had to do. Huge boulders abound as we continued down canyon with undercuts, rock caverns and holes to squeeze through. It was a pretty sporty route as we climbed, crawled and slide our way down canyon. There were even a couple of waterfalls that we were able to climb behind for a unique view. We took a break before the bottom on a nice sunny boulder spot.

After the break it was back to the fun work of finishing up the canyon. A few more interesting holes to slide through and downclimbs to make it to the bottom but we still managed to finish around 330. A lot of fun in this canyon with the extra water to increase the sport factor!
