| partners | | I got a notification from AZDOT last week that AZ88 had been reopened east bound out to Fish Creek overlook. I was like, wow, we should go do Black Cross Butte / Salt River overlook. With all the rain and the road being closed, I was a little concerned what kind of shape the trail would be in. How hard could it be? I had a GPS track from last year Understandably, the trail was grown over. It was still fairly easy to follow up to the high point. Even in the past, from there out to the overlook the trail was faint at places. Today, it was mostly erased. Not only is the trail covered in vegetation, but palo verde, buckhorn, and prickly pear was blocking our way at every turn. The ground was saturated with water and the drainages were flowing. It was slow going but we did make it all the way to the overlook for that spectacular view of the Salt River. Getting back to the high point went well, but going down was a challenge. Lots of slipping and sliding. I think we all fell at least once. We were mentally and physically exhausted when we got back to the truck. |
