Mount Yale is about 10 miles west of Buena Vista; the road to the TH is paved, and the parking lot is even paved. Given the ease of getting to the TH I thought that finding parking might be an issue, but the lot was barely half full. I went on a Thursday, so it might be more crowded on the weekend.
The trail was good and easy to follow. For the first 3 miles of the hike you are in a forest, so views are limited in that stretch. Once you get above the treeline, the views get much better. The hike was tougher than I thought it would be: in the last 2 miles to the summit you gain about 2,200' in altitude. The trail is fairly rocky, and in you are basically doing some stair steps on rock in a few places. The last 1/4 mile to the summit involves some boulder hopping, but it isn't too bad. There are some 360 degree views at the summit, which is nice.
I enjoyed the hike, but it is not among my favorite 14ers in CO, so I doubt if I will do it again. |
