New Water Mountain Petroglyph Site revisited. Went to the site last year ( [ photoset ] ) with Hansenaz( [ photoset ] ). This year went out with some friends from California, one of them was a retired archaeologist.

On my last trip with Hansenaz, we hiked mostly on the east bank of the wash. We found most of the petroglyphs low on the hillside and along the wash. This trip I wanted to stay high, explore the westside of the wash, and try to hike further down the wash to see what I could find.

Found a few nice panels higher up on the hills. On the first trip we had so much success finding petroglyphs that I don’t think we needed to go high. But on this trip I let my friends find the low hanging fruit along the east bank of the wash, while I looked around at some new spots. I did not find much more walking south along wash. Just a few here and there. I turned around and decide to walk the westside of wash across from the petroglyph clusters. As I returned my friend asked me on the radio if I had found a boulder with cupules before. NO! Dang, how did Hansenaz miss this on our last trip! Last time I’m taking him.

The westside of wash did not have a lot of big petroglyph panels or even large single element petroglyphs. But it was obvious the ancients did some living on the westside of the wash. a retired archaeologist from California joined the hike. He found a Mano/ pestle on the westside. What I learned was that the manos would get peck from time to time so make them rough again. If the Mano was to smooth the food material would not get caught on the edge or under the Mano to get ground. The Mano we found was well polished but in the center were pecked areas. The pestle portion of the Mano/pestle was super polished and getting rounded.
