So we set up this fun 4x4 trip out to the rather remote area. I wanted to check out another approach to Cherry Spring Peak from FR 691, versus the usual approach from Bradberry. It looked reasonable from maps, and the distance was about the same. The main difference is there is a little more difficult bushwhacking involved from FR 691. Distance wise, it is about a 5 mile RT either way, and all in all not a really hard hike with maybe a little 1200 feet AEG. The entry point to hike to the peak is on its north side, and we decided against trying to find that spot, since it may or may not be cairned, and I didn't think I would be able to find it. My memory of the hike there in 2001 was that it was a fun , but tricky route up.
After our visit to the cabin, it was back up out of the depths, and we parked along FR 691 about 1.5 miles north of Pride Ranch, in a nice wide fairly level area, basically at the head of Cherry Spring Canyon. We followed it down and broke away to the north up a side drainage that leads up to the east side of the peak. That worked out well, and we climbed up to a spot just south of the peak for a better view. After that, it was back to the truck and that long drive out to civilization. Anytime you go to Jackson Cabin you are in for a long day We didn't get back to Benson until well after dark. |
