We keep lucking out! Today’s hike was awesome! Got started at about 6:30am and the temperature was 53F! I’ll take that over 116F any day.

I’ve been to Jacks Canyon a few miles downstream and really liked it so decided to check out the upper reaches of it. Looking at google maps it looks like at times can have quite a bit of water and with the area getting really good rain in the last 2 weeks figured it was worth a go.

It was beautiful! So green and a surprising amount of water. At first just a few little ponds over run by cows. But farther down canyon got better and better and more water and less cow destruction. The meadows were picturesque. And as the canyon narrowed and started to get surrounded by cliffs found some flowing water! The last final stretch in canyon had flowing water for at least 1/4 mile before we climbed out due to a barb wire fence. Some huge pools as well.

After putzing around on and off some forest roads decided to climb Jackson Butte. Had surprisingly killer views at times and up top was perfect with a breeze keeping the bugs away. (The mosquitoes were out in full force and very friendly the entire time)

Wildlife are what made this hike so special. Saw 1 deer, 3 elk and a bobcat! But the real treat was on the way back. We were mosying along on the edge of a large meadow and we look up not 20 yds away was a herd of 15+ pronghorn chasing a coyote! They ran right past us so close it felt like we were in the middle of it. Best part was they had no clue we were there. They ended up stopping the chase right after that and we had another 30 seconds where they didn’t notice us and we were right among them. My wife and I agreed one of the coolest nature encounters we’ve ever had. And Riley was incredible staying by my side the entire time!
There was a couple fawns in the herd so our guess was Mister coyote tried his luck on one of them and pissed off the bunch?

Finished up by about 11:00 am to beat the heat and thunderstorms and made it back home to Phoenix to enjoy the great weather 😳
