Road to Paradise was mainly dry and clear of any ice/snow so the drive up was a breeze. Restrooms at the visitor center are open and there is one ranger manning the desk just inside the visitor center (the rest of the visitor center is not open). We did a snowshoe from Paradise by starting out on the closed, unplowed road just below the inn. At the 4th crossing we took a left and headed up to Mazama Ridge. From there we followed the trails of others to the junction with the High Lakes trail. Unlike the summer trail, the snowshoe route for Mazama Ridge hugs the treeline closest to Rainier. The junction with the High Lakes trail is signed. From there you can head down to Reflection Lakes or take the trail a short distance to where it intersects with the Valley Road. Both ways are marked with orange poles (Mazama Ridge is not). We took a right and headed to the road where we took another right to follow the road back up to our starting point and complete a loop of about 5 miles. Lots of people out today but it never felt crowded. Views were great! |
