| no partners | | Went hiking just south of where I live in the Santa Rita Mountains. My goal was to get to Gunsight Pass. This pass was used in the 1967 movie Hombre with Paul Newman and was the site of the stage coach holdup and I wanted to check it out. The plan was simple enough just follow the Helvetia dirt road up to the pass. The snag in the plan was exploratory work being done for the Rosemont Mine. The roads were closed off and said no trespassing and no cameras. Forest service web site doesn't mention the area being closed. I stayed off the road and headed up toward the pass avoiding the work areas. Good day to be wearing my camies, blend in with the background. I got to the right elevation for the pass but the problem was I was too far south. I abandon the Idea of getting to the pass and headed back. There is a lot of history in this area of 1900 mining, lots of artifacts. When I got back to the jeep I drove up another road that headed to the pass, no sign indicating this road was closed. I made it up just below the pass and could go no further because a sign indicating that I had to radio ahead that I was coming up. Obviously a one way road used by heavy equipment so I turned around. I did see another possible route I could take to the pass via Lopez Pass and I might try that in a few days. Always nice to get out and hike even if you don’t get to your destination. Great views to the East of the Whetstones and Las Cienegas. Off trail was rough not because it was steep but the catclaw will eat you up. I had on a long sleeve shirt and my arms still looked like a war zone when I got home.
Looking at the Forest service map, a lot of this area is on private land, probably mining rights. Access was allowed in the past and still is on some of the roads. The question is which ones. I will have to check out access from the West side via Helvetia. |
