| no partners | | I had to be at the Phoenix Airport on Tuesday so I decided to do a little hiking in the supes while I was in the area. My plan was to hike the first day in the Pinal’s and the second on West Pinto Creek Trail. I had forgotten the Pinal Mountains burned pretty severely last year so when I got there the trails I was planning on doing were closed. The road to the peak was open so I drove to the peak to check it out. The only trails that were open on the north and east side were the Icebox Canyon and Kelner Canyon. It was noon so I decided to scrap my plans for the Pinal’s and head to Haunted Canyon and at least get a little hiking in. I hiked this trail before but it was a pleasant redo.
I didn’t have a GPS route for this trail but it is easy enough to follow. I was thinking I could hike to Toneys Cabin, I had never been there before. I was going by memory as to where it was. I only made it in about 3.5 miles which I found out later was about a mile short of where the cabin is. I will have to do this at some future date. Nice hike even though it wasn’t what I planned. The creek was running and the pump station along the trail was still leaking water, it was leaking a few years back when I was there so I guess this is a designed in feature. There were 3 cars at the trail head when I got there and none when I got back. Saw two groups of hikers on the trail. This is a pleasant hike and the road in well maintained by the mine. The usual Superstition Mountain flowers were present but nothing to write home about. |
