Not only is it posted as no trespassing the sign also says you have to have on Hearing protection, Safety glasses, Hard Hat, yellow vest, gloves and boots, I was fresh out of most of those, I did have boots though. Since it was only .6 miles I decided to head over toward Sycamore Canyon. Parked at the Saddle along FSR 4050 and walked the road down to where it crosses Sycamore Canyon. This road is in fair condition and can actually be driven on by any vehicle with just a bit of clearance (Prius probably won't make it). I was here to hike so driving was not an option. Great views to the north of Mount Fagan and in the distance Tucson and the Catalina Mountains.
Not a real interesting hike, just a 600 foot drop into Sycamore Canyon along a road. Everything was dry, the grass that should have a little color was yellow since it really hasn't rained this winter. The vegetation was thick though from last summers rain. I did spook a deer while hiking down, he heard me walking the road but was having a hard time spotting me. The map shows Sycamore Canyon coming up from around Corona De Tucson one branch heads up the southwest slopes of Mount Fagan and the other branch heads further south and drains the hills southwest of Mount Fagan. Both branches are labeled Sycamore Canyon. I walked the road until it crossed the creek and returned the way I came. Under the right conditions this could be an interesting hike or drive, maybe after a snow. I may at some point hike up the Canyon from near Corona De Tucson. |
