I was supposed to meet a guy this a.m. who reeeeally wanted to do Finger Rock to Kimball. I tried to convince him to do the Pima Canyon version instead just to see how the trail was there, but he insisted on Finger Rock, so we put this on the books.

I arrived at 0620 ( 10 minutes early ) and got to the starting line, but was still standing there alone 20 minutes later. Long story short, after a few texts and another 20 minutes, I launched on my own.

While I like this hike and do it frequently, there are a number of reasons that I didn’t really want to do it today, but here I was, so off I went.

As I wasn’t really feeling it, I drifted off into my head and the ascent went by quickly. Then just before I was to turn right for Kimball, I had an idea. I hadn’t done the final 2 ish miles of the Finger Rock in a long time and figured this would be a great time to do just that. I took a break at the saddle-camp and figured out how much time, water & energy I had versus what I needed, and within 10 minutes was jumping over to the east side.

I was not sure what to expect as far as route finding, but luckily I had a track on my phone and transferred it to my F5. Without it, this would have been tough, even for someone familiar with the route. It wasn’t horrible, it wasn’t wonderful, it was a bit of a challenge and I was having fun with it. Then out of the blue, an alarm went off telling me to wrap it up, so I checked the fenix to assess my situation. It seemed that I was about 1/3 mile short of the end, but was so at a rather deteriorated spot and on a pretty steep side slope. For about 5 more minutes, I kept inching forward, but ultimately decided to pull the plug. That piece of the route may no longer exist from what I saw, but a workaround will have to wait until another day.

The return trip was the usual - people everywhere. The parking lot was way into overflow by 1400, and though I didn’t check them all, I didn’t see any AZ plates other than mine in the lot.

dry Finger Rock Canyon Dry Dry
Aside from a few damp spots crossing the trail, here and there, the canyon is dry.

No longer a spring per se, but a couple of pools that show themselves in the wash bottom. Today is the first time I've seen water here in years (other than immediately following rains), but it was covered in sludge.
