So right now is a great time to hike this trail!
Earlier in the spring we worked the lower portion of the trail from Billy Lawrence through Knolls Hole. More recently, we worked the upper portion from Murphy's ranch (it now has a different name Haloi, or something) down to where we left off earlier. There's still some touching-up to be done, but it's relatively clear all the way through.
Temps at the upper elevations yesterday were in the lower 70s when it was 103 in Phoenix, so about 30 cooler. We didn't see another hiker the entire day.
Lots of bear scat, some of which seemed fresh, but we didn't see any bear. An amazing array of bird sounds, including one of my favorites, the hermit thrush, which I identified using the Merlin app. Also, western tanagers and various warblers and grosbeaks, among others. On the last trip we saw a wild turkey. A wide variety of butterflies also fluttered around us today.
Oak and maple trees were greening out nicely, and the raspberry bushes and mexican locust seemed to be growing back menacingly since their last recent clipping. Maybe one more touch-up trip before moving on to another trail. All-in-all, this trail is amazing and mystical! |
