Steady climb up through lovely forest to a short side hike up to the peak of Thunder Mountain. This is listed as the Amador County high point, but the actual highest point may be a third of a mile to the northeast (2 feet higher, for those who care about such things).
Loop continues north along a ridge with Kirkwood ski resort below, and on around to the Thunder Mountain trailhead also on Highway 88. The stretch near the TM trailhead was burned in the 2021 Caldor Fire. The loop crosses Highway 88 and roughly parallels the highway down through Martin Meadow campground (now closed) back to the Horse Canyon trailhead. Nearly the entire section of the loop north and west of the highway was destroyed by the Caldor Fire, and I can't imagine they will bother trying to keep it open. I'd say the best hike would be out-and-back to the top of Thunder Mountain from the Horse Canyon trailhead, next best would be out-and-back from the Thunder Mountain trailhead. |
