After breaking camp at Spencer Canyon Campground, we decided to get back on Aspen Draw since I spoke so highly of it. That part was fine. But then we decided to take Mint Spring back around to Summerhaven. So much for beating the heat: That trail is completely exposed and overgrown. Plus it passed right through the Wilderness of Rocks and left us yearning to stay in that area instead. Finally made it to town around 4 and rewarded ourselves with a great meal at Sawmill Run. Then we waddled back to the cars for a quick beer before parting ways. That leg was actually very nice, as it was back in the trees and we got a light rain.
Wrapped the trip up by taking the Control Road down through Oracle. Although it's rated high clearance 2WD, the first 7 miles from the top is pretty rough and washed-out from the rains. I'd say one brief section is 4WD, at least if you're alone. Great drive overall, though. Beats driving through town. |
