SUN_HIKER
It was a beautiful day for our trip from Roger's Trough to Circlestone on Sunday. Sunshine, clear skies and cool temperatures were the order of the day. Sun_Hiker and I met at 5:30 AM, drove to the Rogers Trough trailhead and started hiking a few minutes before 7:30 AM. The Forest Roads 172 and 172A were more rutted than usual but passable.

This is an 18.8 mile round trip which we did in 10 hours with breaks along the way. Visited the Reavis Gravesite, had rest and a snack at Reavis saddle and spent about ½ hour at the Circlestone site. In addition to the ruins at Circlestone, the views of Four Peaks and the surrounding area are great. At the intersection of the Fireline and the Circlestone Access (or Allan Blackman) trails there is a small model of a Circlestone ruins in addition to a couple of cairns that were not there on my previous visits. Kind of beats a trail sign I think. See the photos.

All trails are in great shape and the streams just before the intersection of the Reavis and Fireline trails are flowing well. The humane way of doing this hike is to backpack for 2 nights and hike to Circlestone on your free day. It would be about 6 miles round trip from Reavis Ranch and you can add 1 to 1.5 miles to that to go to Mound Mountain peak (see the trip description). The off trail to Mound Mountain is a nasty bushwhack so be prepared with long pants, long sleeved shirt and gloves if you choose to take on that challenge. I previously downloaded a GPS route from Circlestone to Mound Mountain peak which can be used as a general guide, but it is truly a freestyle off trail hike so find the best open spaces you can. The GPS route or a waypoint for the peak will be helpful. Mound Mountain is clearly visible from Circlestone but disappears as you enter heavy vegetation along the way.
