Although the elevation is only around 2000’, the trail was flirting with the timberline at that level. Some short trees, with a lot of open views. The valley ahead was very scenic and surrounded by snow capped peaks.
Trail was in good shape, easy, but muddy in a lot of places. A bridge crossed the south fork of the Eagle River a couple miles in, and shortly after that, there was a split—you can stay on the main trail and head towards Eagle & Symphony Lakes, or go left and head up on the Hanging Valley Trail or something like that. I stayed on the main trail, but then I started seeing moose after moose, after the fourth one, I paused and looked ahead and could still see a few more in the distance, plus one moving object that I’m 99% was a brown bear, it wasn’t moving like the moose were. At that point, I decided three miles of this trail was enough for me and turned around. Easy hike back out.
About a half mile from the trailhead, Hunter Pass trail heads west and up the steep mountainside. It was just rerouted this summer, and instead of a steep trail straight up, is now a series of long switchbacks on an excellent, easy trail. No trees on this one, it climbed immediately above the timberline. Hunter Pass was a long, narrow pass and I walked most of the way through the pass just to see what it was like. Backtracked after a moment to the east end of the pass and headed north on what I’m pretty sure was the Rendezvous Trail. Very steep, loose rock, but excellent views. Stayed on this trail for about a half mile to a little rocky “peak”. Considered continuing another mile on the ridge to Rendezvous Peak, which looked enticing, but decided to turn around at that point since my family had already been stuck at the cabin all day.
The hike back down the steep Rendezvous Trail was easier than anticipated, then the hike back down the Hunter Pass trail was a breeze. I’d like to hike the full length of the Rendezvous Trail on a future trip. Nice hike today, with good weather too. |
