| no partners | | Headed up to Munds Park to scratch an itch. In the past, I wasn't able to find a willing hiking partner, so I made a last-minute decision to explore something new. I had never ventured off the east side of I-17 through Munds Park, and it turned out to be a delightful little area.
You'll never run out of parking space at the Pinewood parking lot; it's quite spacious. The first three trails on this hike are part of the Kelly Canyon Multi-use trail system (less than 62" in width). I recommend hiking this during the weekdays, as it can get quite busy with motorized vehicles on the weekends. Throughout the day, I encountered three hikers, one mountain biker, and two dog walkers.
Little Horse Trail #247
This trail meanders through tall pines and gambrel oaks on a smooth path. It's actually quite pleasant and connects to a couple of forest roads before ending at Rocky Road Trail #241.
Rocky Road Trail #241
This trail lives up to its name, and I was eagerly anticipating its end by the time it intersected with Munds Canyon Trail #240.
Munds Canyon Trail #240
This trail gently descends in and out of Munds Canyon, passing through the ponderosa and oak canopy while heading back to the trailhead.
Crystal Point Trail
This trail was my favorite of the day. I only wish I had more time to make it down to Odell Lake. At the top, you get some stunning views of Sedona.
I'd recommend keeping this hike in your back pocket for family and friends visiting the Flagstaff area. It's also a great additional hike if you're returning from the high country. |
