We checked out the tons of equipment and everything else that was left behind. Ventured into the mine shaft but only about 150 feet. Done with mine tour it was time for off trail.
From the mine we hiked onto the ridgeline above and the goal was to follow that over to Harcuvar Peak. The ridge was relatively easy hiking except for all the hidden hedge hog type cactus. We both stopped several times to carefully remove cacti from our shoes. Eventually the ridgeline drops to a saddle below Harcuvar Peak but when we arrived above the saddle we decided that there was not enough time to do the peak and the rest of the hike in a reasonable finish.
So we opted to skip the peak and head for the incline railway which was the main goal of the hike anyway. We tried a shortcut across to the original ridgeline we were hiking and it pretty much worked. Halfway in between found a nice spot for lunch break and check for shoe cactus.
After lunch we continued on the ridgeline over to the top of the incline railway. Of course the railway has seen better days but it was really interesting to see what once was. I was really surprised by how steep the incline was down to the canyon bottom. We carefully followed the railway most of the way down checking out what's left of their setup.
At the bottom took another short break and then all we had to do was follow the road back out. Great hike with some mine history of a bygone era! |
