| no partners | | Got invited 13 years later to join Alex and Paul on a repeat of Collins to Kane Gulch Ranger station. Pack was 16 pounds lighter which made a big difference. Met up at VOG to car camp after getting off 10 straight night shifts and 6.5 hour drive. We started 4/19. Saw some of the same sites and dwellings. Most of the middens are now roped off. Turkey Pen is closed. It is interesting because two years ago I did sheiks to bullet and everything pottery etc. was removed. I was told that it was taken to museum in Blanding. Displays ie. Pot sherds etc. are back in full force which I suspect is why they are roping of middens. Views were great introduction of Russian thistle removed most of the skin on my shins by the end of the trip. Great company. Good to see some familiar faces and catch up a little after 13 years as well as meeting a couple new people. Learned me a few things along the way that should help as the kids are getting old enough to backpack. My daughter is doing a couple days in great sand dunes and has another trip which include Mt. Shavano in June through the outdoor school she is attending this year. I filtered enough water on Tuesday afternoon and planned to camp by junction ruins making my pack about the heaviest it had been for the entire trip with 6 liters I got to junction and decided to hike out and car camp giving me a night to rest before driving straight back to work. I should’ve dumped 3 liters, but I felt good and was making good time so I didn’t stop. Got out around 8pm after hiking from bullet canyon out to Kane Gulch Ranger station on the last day. Ate dinner in the parking lot drove 5 minutes to a slick rock dispersed campsite broke out the lavabox and sat in front of the fire watching the full moon. Slept in cooked breakfast and drove back to Taos. Rest of crew got out about 2 pm the next day and headed out. Great Trip. I dried all my meals at home and was happy with results. Too cheap to spend 15$ on freeze dried meals. Ziplocs are way lighter than freeze dried meal packs which saved me a lot of weight and space. Good Times! Unlike last time my filter made it past day 1. Water was more plentiful the farther we hiked, but we did have to filter from some holes along the way. My collapsible 5 liter sink was best for getting water to fill up dirty bags. I will most likely devise a gravity set up and bring something bigger than a 16 ounce dirty water bag on future trips filtering 1-2 hours squeezing bags got old quick. |
