| partners | | Today felt more like February than almost May. High of 41, a lot of clouds, and quite windy. Well, it was maybe 55 down low around Shovel Springs. We wore pants and coats, but that was for the best as the section of the ridge trail below Samaniengo Pines was thorny with locust and difficult to follow at times. It is well cairned, so no where near impossible.
We were about to turn back when we climbed some boulders and could see more green oaks telling us that the area below us did not burn as hot, so we were able to press on.
All the metal trail signs are intact and junctions are easy to find. Travel back up to Shovel Springs was pretty fast given the topography, the flowing Creek, and the small fraley trail markers which remain. Long time members will understand that reference. Back up at the pine grove it was then an easy hike to the top.
A great hike and one last hike in the Catalinas and with Preston. Drove down the Catalina highway almost 20 years after the first time up here. Lots of memories here. All of them good. Took me 3 years to return here from my first visit. I'll return, just hope it isn't 3 years or more. |
