| no partners | | First time parking at the Bush Highway trailhead. It's a nice addition, and unlike the Granite Reef area just down the road, no Tonto Pass required.
I had just finished a 10 mi. run in Las Sendas, so was looking for something relatively low impact, and this fit the bill.
Generally wandered from the parking area toward the dam via meandering spider trails. At the wash crossing, I was a bit surprised to see official signage for the trail (I half wondered if the area was off limits). Crossed through a gate and across the drainage, where the trail turned east and dropped down to the river, just below the recreation area.
Although this is beyond the "end" of the trail in the hike description, the trail continues east for several miles.
I wandered through the recreation area, where it was already busy with people enjoying the beautiful morning, and then picked the trail back up on the far side of the parking lot. After briefly going into the trees, the trail pops up on the road and parallels it for a a bit. Then after hitting a pull-off parking area, the trail departs to the NE and follows a fence line. The fire through here took a toll on the views/vegetation. The scenery is pretty bleak if you don't periodically divert over to the river (which is generally obscured from view by vegetation). As such, diversions are highly recommended, as the river creates a lovely view.
I made it up to the old dam site, before deciding to turn back as the weather was getting hot and my water supply dwindling. Saw one of the "wild" horses along the banks, and also passed a fellow who had pulled out on the shore, built a fire and was looking to down a very large bottle of whiskey. To each his own ....
The return trip was straightforward. Other than at Granite Reef, I passed 10 or so hikers on the trail. |
