Our last hike for the day in Volcanoes national park, this one is right by the Sea Arch.
The trail crosses a near trackless lava field where spotting the passage of other hikers is difficult. Fortunately, the route is well marked with cairns made of the same lava rocks (so they blend in with the landscape if you aren't looking for them).
The terrain is marginally challenging with some of the lava being of the smooth slippery variety and other portions being rough, sharp, uneven cinders. Nothing too technical but enough that this wasn't just a walk.
It was mostly cloudy when we went so the temperature wasn't bad but I imagine on a sunny day the black lava would absorb and radiate a lot of heat making this trail baking. Fortunately that wasn't an issue for us.
The petroglyphs were pretty well preserved although there was some graffiti on the approach section. Apparently the natives add more marks from time to time.
Not a bad spot if you are in the area, certainly the largest concentration of Petroglyphs we saw in the park. |
