| no partners | | Now that I only live a couple hours away, I plan on spending much more time at Grand Canyon ... on Tuesday I took a rather spur-of-the-moment trip for my first visit in years.
I arrived just before 9:30 a.m., and got through the gate without a wait - then snagged one of the last few FCFS sites at Mather.
My main activity was riding my ebike from Mather out to Hermit's Rest and back - about 16 miles roundtrip. It was glorious.
The Greenway Trail from the campground, through the Village to Hermit Road is well-marked and very pleasant. Hermit Road is fun - especially the long, fast downhill stretches - and I stopped at many viewpoints. Quite a few people biking it - many more than last time I rode it (on a regular bike, when I was ten years younger, acclimated to the elevation, and in much better shape, lol ... ).
The Greenway Trail/bike path resumes again for the last three miles to Hermit's Rest. This portion must be ridden slowly and carefully due to many walkers. On the way back I choose to ride on the road the whole way.
Hermit's Rest was a bit of a zoo, but there were only a few vehicles and a couple people at the trailhead - just like the old days.
I also strolled along the Rim Trail, ate ice cream, and eventually watched the sunset from near Yavapai Point.
The next day I lounged around, visited some shops, then walked out to Shoshone Point before I departed a little after noon ... the entrance line stretched halfway to Tusayan at that time.
The Park still feels like home to me - and I already have a couple more visits planned! |
