| no partners | | I'm trying to hit as many of my old favorites - and a few new places - as I can before I wrap up my time in Southern AZ ... I've been "meaning to" visit Parker Canyon Lake for at least five years, so I finally did.
First off, the drive down there from Elgin is extremely scenic and I enjoyed it very much!
It's always touted as higher and cooler than Tucson, which it is - but it was still quite toasty midday ... I wouldn't want to visit when it was much warmer.
The campground is split into two sections. The RV loop was close to full, but the tent camp area only had a few sites occupied. I was very happy with my chosen spot. There is a bit more trash around than I'd like (I found plenty of fishing line to pick up - even in the campground ... I can't escape that stuff), but overall it looks pretty good and the pit toilets were decent.
The lake is pretty large and clean looking. Barely anyone there on Wednesday, but it was picking a bit by the time I left Thursday. People were definitely catching fish.
I was able to use the toys I brought - rode the bike a couple times, and took the kayak out and paddled from the boat ramp out to the dam and back. An Osprey hit the water like shot and struggled to get airborne with a huge fish just about 25 feet from me - that was cool. Also saw a Bald Eagle catch fish two times and fly off with them - presumably to a nest out of site.
Thursday morning I did a bird hike from camp along the shore to the boat ramp and back - the birding was pretty great ... got like nine first-of-year species. Ran into a few other birders, too.
I could have happily stayed another night, but I got some emails regarding some business I needed to get back and take care of - maybe another time ... it's definitely worth a longer stay. |
