| no partners | | Being the lucky recepient of a Coyote Buttes North permit, I headed out with a small band of fellow adventurers to see the infamous sandstone formation known only as "The Wave". I half-expected to be a little disappointed. Afterall, the hype was pretty over-the-top, and I am rarely as excited as non-Arizonans by the more touristy spots. However, I was delighted - even amazed by the beauty and curiosity of the whole area. Sure, the wave is pretty nifty and exceedingly photogenic: but the short little trek out there is equally incredible - crossing slickrock ledges, climbing sand dunes and skirting some of the most amazing hoodoos, teepees and buttes I've ever seen!
Because it's not even really possible to have a proper trail out to the Wave itself, the BLM gives you a handy little navagational aid with photographs, gps waypoints and general directions to get you out there. I was unnecessarily worried about finding the thing - it was very easy given our instructions. Because it had not rained recently, there were ample footprints in every sandy area and a number of rock cairns to mark out route. It would have been nearly impossible to miss the thing.
We spent about a half-hour exploring and photographing the Wave itself - though I certainly could have spent much longer. There were places to go and other rocks to see. Next time I will definitely plan for the whole day, and do some more exploring. There were many areas that called to me as I walked to and from the Wave, and I think that the BLM sells the whole area short by just billing this as a quick trip out to this one particular formation.
It's a veritable playground for grownups! So much fun! |
