This is a great winter hike if the weather is moderate. There are great long distance views, great midrange views: The Wave, and interesting small features such as animal tracks in the sand and snow. There was just enough snow to provide contrast to the rocks and the seasonal ponds were frozen. The temperature at 7:30 am was 15 degrees but there was no wind and it soon warmed up to the low 40's.

My GPS route is from the trailhead to The Wave and south. Mark and I also headed west looking for the dinosaur tracks but the terrain at the point specified on the Zion National park web site didn't match their description of the terrain. We went up and down and back and forth around their GPS point without success.

Mark climbed to Top Rock Arch and down in about an hour--not shown on my GPS track.

On the way out we took a short cut around the BLM map's Points 2 and 3. This was shorter but somewhat more rugged. We then hiked to the Wire Pass slot canyon to the point of the first 6 foot drop--which was well worth the effort. If you plan on going farther, bring a short rope to make it easier to get down and back up.
