However, 2 years ago (according to someone I spoke to on the trail in June 2024) West Spruce Trail #264 was extended 3 1/3 miles further east to Copper Basin Road. The east trailhead for West Spruce Trail #264 is now across the road from a parking lot on the south side of Copper Basin Road, 0.8 mile west of the Aspen Creek Trailhead. This route was hiked from the old east trailhead on Thumb Butte Road to the new east trailhead on Copper Basin Road. West Spruce Trail #264 was my favorite trail in the Prescott National Forest and this extension continues the experience of a mostly quiet (except for loud dirt bikes and ATVs along the jeep trail that West Spruce Trail follows for a mile or so) walk among Ponderosa pines, Gamble and other oaks and a few junipers. This stretch of West Spruce Trail also has a nice view of Thumb Butte aligned with the San Francisco peaks (see photo}> |
