On other days, I have gone to the end of Wolverton Mountain Trail, but my goal on this trip was to get in ten miles as easily and quickly as possible. To get the full ten miles, I had to go past the high point of the trail which meant after turning around I had to climb back up to that high point. There are no other climbs on the return trip, except to cross the low ridge in the last mile that parallels AZ 89.
Highlights of the trip include the view of Thumb Butte aligned with Granite Mountain (see photo) and a few miles of rocks that have fallen from Quartz Mountain over the years. After the first mile, Wolverton Mountain Trail begins its upward climb to the saddle between Quartz Mountain and Wolverton Mountain. Along much of this stretch you will see quartz with veins of rose pink, yellow to gold, black and even orange. A few examples are in the photos. The photos include one of the sections with the most quartz along and in the trail. |
