I've been wanting to check out these ruins that I spied on Google Earth some time ago, but I knew I wouldn't be able to get there on my regular mountain bike without a good rain to pack down the sand, and even then, it would be questionable. After a couple of shake down rides on the new fat tire bike, I was ready to take on the sandy challenge. I packed extra water and snacks in case something bad happened miles from anywhere, spoiler alert, nothing happened! Started from home and exited the Estrella Mountain Ranch community in a southeast trajectory. Picked up the sandy powerline road that would take me all the way to the western base of the Estrella Mountains. Followed the base for a few miles and started my way back west into what I'll call the Barth Ranger ruins, because I found that etched into one of the remaining structures. After exploring the site for a bit I continued west on what would be Ocotillo to an old landing strip. Rode down the strip which was in really good condition. I'd land there if I had a STOL plane. West bound again on Ocotillo and then north on 163rd Ave, west on Germann out to Rainbow Valley road. Took a familiar route back home from there. Got a great picture of an osprey while I was checking out old irrigation canals that litter the area. Had the whole 3 hours to myself, didn't see anyone else in the desert today, which is fine by me |
