Got to First Water TH at about 7:30 AM. Took Dutchman out and passed a couple hikers near Parker Pass, but otherwise a quiet, cool morning with a light breeze. Trails were notably dry due to the lack of rain. This was the first time hiking Black Top Mesa, and the trail to Bull Pass and the summit were much better than anticipated.
Just after Bull Pass, we passed a few backpackers who had stayed overnight at the top, and raved about the views of Weaver's Needle. We were excited, although for a couple of us in our group this was the first longer hike we'd done in a while, and the miles and elevation were starting to show their effect.
After making it to the top, the views did not disappoint. Weaver's Needle was the obvious gem, but a new perspective on Battleship and others were also impressive. This is a really great viewpoint for much of the inner Supes.
After a quick break, it was back down and out via Black Mesa Trail. In hindsight, we should have done this clockwise, as the views going back Black Mesa are a bit dull. Passed a dozen or so more hikers on the way back to TH. Although a bit slower than in prior years, we all really enjoyed this hike. |
