Beautiful Saturday in the Superstition Mountains as January comes to close 15 miles 3600 AEG. Temperatures were low 60s to amazing 80s across the 7-hour day. Tackled 3 peaks with @John10s, well it was more like BEHIND John as he led the pack for the day. Respect. John was moving so fast I had to do high speed time lapse photography. Took Second Water Black Mesa and hit Yellow Peak 3061 first. If you’ve ever gone up, it’s pretty much just up over the rolly boulders to the top least resistance. Random pointless cairns here and there… The Superstition are super green with full wildflower explosion right now. Was trying to remember the last time it looked like this, this early for spring… Poppies lupines hyacinths globemallow brittlebush explosion and everything else…
Working with clear sky but a bit low visibility, signed the summit register and headed down. I’m ready for some more rain to keep things popping. Regrouped in Boulder Basin, which is making ongoing recovery after be desolated by the Sawtooth Fire. The fried Bull Pass sign has been replaced which was nice to see. Ran into a gang of cool kids coming down from a secret mission @wallyfrack @adilling @DarthStiller. It was mission accomplished I gather. Spent a little time at second destination Peak 3354 (aka Black Top Mesa) noshing and reading inscriptions scattered across the mesa. I usually find new ones here and there. The social trail to The End is pretty worked in now. A lot of the cactus forest that used to be up there is no longer. Pretty easy navigation to just about any place you want to get to now.
Back down Bull Pass reversed up Black Mesa trail for the final summit Peak 3097 aka Black Mesa. Also making good post-Sawtooth-fire recovery and a mild slope traverse to summit More scenic shots and group bonding before the descent. At this point everybody was racing back to end the day. Took my time and rode the caboose back to First Water TH. Was a steady day there with folks coming and going. These are all places I’ve been before but never on the same day. The overall was a bit faster than I usually hike so taxed me a bit, but cannot wait till my next trip… As the saying goes, “another great day in the mountains”. |
