| partners | | I did this hike a few years back and I can remember thinking; I don't want to do this trail again, the climb out of Bear Canyon is really steep. I also was not that impressed with the hike itself either. Ginny and I decided to do this hike since it is the one section of AZ Trail in Mount Lemmon we have not done. Not sure what is different from the last time I hiked it but it is a rather scenic trail, great views to the South and West. Could be that the weather with an intermittent cloud cover, cool temps, company that made the difference. The climb out of Bear Canyon and a short climb out of an unnamed canyon are still steep though. I think the person who laid out the route drew a straight line from where they were at to where they wanted to go and laid the trail out along that line. Almost like the trail follows an old jeep trail that heads straight up the hill. I actually think the going down was worse than the going up. We hiked to the General Hitchcock Camp ground where we took our lunch break. We shared our lunch break with a bunch of Mexican Jays and a red headed wood pecker.
Lots of hikers on the trail but it's Saturday on Mount Lemmon so doesn't surprise me. This trail is heavily used by Mountain bikers and we saw quite a few. Only one that was into going really fast and nearly ran us over, the others seemed more aware that there are hikers on the trail and they were very courteous. Ran into a patch of snow/ice along the trail in the unnamed canyon, kind of surprised me since there has not been much rain here. Only water we saw was in crevice in a rock along the first stream crossing, maybe a gallon in the pool, sure every animal within a mile knows about it.
Really enjoyed this hike but once again I don't think I'll do it again. Might take a short hike up the canyon where bug Spring is, looked kind of interesting from the ridge above. |
