The DQ mine was apparently one of the best gold producing mines in Southern CA. And mine shafts are all over the place. The trail passes by about a dozen large mines (all sealed off). It was definitely a large-scale operation in its heyday.
Some mining remnants still sitting around.
The highlight and destination for the hike was the Eagle Cliff Bounder House, which is next to a mine of the same name and was ingeniously constructed using natural cavities in the surrounding boulders. As far as remote living accommodations, it looked pretty sweet.
Highly recommend this one. It's not on the official park map, but plenty of folks seem to know about it. That said, we had the "house" to ourselves when visiting. |
