| no partners | | Note: The Dome was our first peak of 2 for the day. We finished by hiking the Mays Hills high point. That's where I entered all stats.
See my trip report for Mays Hills HP for all stats & info.
This hike was something that was planned on for months, however, the person who originally planned it was a NO SHOW!! I invited Andy Martin because I noticed that it was a peak that he hadn't summited which is quite rare! Andy has been hiking a long time and his stats are truly impressive. Thank you, Andy, for joining us on this hike! It was a great outing and the weather was pretty good overall but got a bit warm in the afternoon.
We started off by hiking in the direction of a low saddle, staying right of a small canyon. There was evidence of cattle all over this area and they plowed some decent trails for us heading in all different directions. There were some thorn bushes but it was mostly the non-catclaw bush variety, which didn't stick to your clothes. Andy led the way up to the low saddle where we stopped to take a water and snack break. From this point, I led the rest of the way toward the summit. We followed various cattle trails up and noticed that the cattle went pretty high up, maybe even as high as the summit. The last few hundred feet were quite steep and involved using our hands in some places. Brian went ahead and made it to the summit first, then I was a couple minutes behind. Andy was at a false summit thinking we would be there but the true summit was further up. He met up with us a few minutes later.
At the high point, we found a registry in a rock pile with on average one group per year. This isn't a very popular hike and my guess is because there isn't a trail and the drive requires some serious 4x4 skills. At the summit, we took a long break and enjoyed a light breeze and shared a lot of crazy hiking stories - adventures, tragedies, etc.
THE DRIVE:
------------
During the drive, I bottomed out my high clearance Chevy Colorado a couple of times. Brian had to get out and clear a few rocks from the road. Then, we were able to continue. There were a few wash crossings and some steep sections along the way.
Driving Directions:
---------------------
(4x4 required)
From Phoenix or Tucson, take I-10 East toward Benson.
Take exit 303 for AZ-80 toward AZ-10/Benson/Douglas.
Continue onto AZ-80 E/W 4th St, continue for 1.8 mi.
Keep right to continue on AZ-80 E, continue for 23.5 mi.
Once in the center of Tombstone, turn right onto W Fremont St.
Turn left at the 1st cross street onto S Haskell St.
Turn right at the 1st cross street onto W Allen St., continue for 0.9 mi.
W Allen St turns slightly right and becomes W Schiefflin Monument Rd.
Reset odometer here and use these mileages:
1.25 miles - look to the right and notice a 30 foot tall rock structure which is the Tombstone monument.
1.38 miles - turn left and open primitive gate.
1.67 miles - wash crossing
1.78 miles - turn left
1.9 miles - stay left and go around the curve
1.97 to 2.03 - wash crossing
2.7 miles - look for place to park off the road |
