| no partners | | We arrived at the trailhead at 6.30 pm. The temp was 93 and the sun was low in the sky. Overall, it was comfortable, even though I thought it would not be. Having a light breeze definitely helped! We crossed the road and started on the Ringtail trail. I didn't have cell signal at this location. This trail took us around Picture Rocks peak (2883) and after a little over 1 mile, we found ourselves in Picture Rocks wash. We turned right and continued for 1/3 mile until we found the Cactus Canyon trail on our left. We turned left and continued for 1/4 miles to the Coyote Pass trail, turning left. After about 700 feet, we reached a high point and had cell signal for the first time on this hike. After hiking a total of 1.95 miles, look to the left and up and you should see the saddle West of Peak 2741. This is the saddle you will want to aim for.
There's no official trail going up from here, but the hiking is pretty easy. There's not a lot of brush so you can weave around any obstacles easily. Along the way to the saddle, we found a few decent animal trails. It took us only 5 minutes to get from the main trail to the saddle going at a very comfortable pace, taking our time. Once we were at the saddle, we were able to look North and see the old Yuma mine. We decided to get up to the summit because the sun was already setting and we didn't have a lot of light left. From the saddle it probably took us less than 5 minutes to get to the summit. From here we had some nice views of Tucson and the sunset looking West. After we took some photos we headed back to the saddle.
From the saddle, we decided to head North and check out Pima mine. Getting down from here was slightly harder than getting up to the saddle from the South because the brush was thicker and the slope was steeper. We found a few animal trails and needed to weave a bit but after a few minutes we found ourselves at the Pima mine area. The satellite map showed a trail but we had trouble finding it. We decided to step over the barbed wire fence to get to the other side of the mine. I was here a few years before and remember there being a trail, but wasn't sure exactly where to find it. On the West side of the old wooden structure, I found a trail heading South. This trail seemed to dead end at a fence line and beyond it there was a steep canyon. Overall, our route going down wasn't ideal. From here we decided to wing it and head North because it looked like the old good way to get out from where we were. We had to zig zag around a bit to avoid cliffs and thick brush but we eventually made it to an unmarked trail at 32.316373, -111.121998.
We followed this unmarked trail NW for at least 1/4 mile back to the Picture rocks wash trail. From here, we were only 100 feet away from the Ringtail trail junction. We took the Ringtail trail back to our starting point. I would like to go back and find a better route down from/up to the old Pima mine.
