We hiked this peak in conjunction with Little Baldy which resulted in roughly a 5 mile loop with over 1,200 feet in AEG.
LITTLE BALDY
----------------
We took the Long park spur trail to the Crest trail #270. Both trails were maintained very well. Thank you to the maintenance crews for the Crest trail #270. It's one of my favorite trails in the whole state!
We continued South on the Crest trail until we reached the Saulsbury trail #263. We passed by this trail many times but today would be our first time taking it. The trail was in pretty good shape, but wasn't quite as good as the Crest trail #270. From this trail, we would drop roughly 900 feet to get down to the base of Little Baldy. Little Baldy is the peak with the group of Aspens on the right side as you're approaching it. The trail continues along to the right of Little Baldy, so we found a reasonable place to exit and get on the ridgeline. From here, it was a relatively easy walk up. There were some rock formations to go around but within a few minutes we were on the summit.
From the top, looking West we could see Peak 8676 which was slightly lower in elevation but it has more prominence. Maybe we'll come back and hike that one on another trip.
On Little Baldy, we did not find a registry so we started a new one. I added the names of the 5 hikers who logged this peak on this website - only 5 other hikers since 1995.
On the way back, we had about 900 feet of gain on the Saulsbury trail to get back to the Crest trail. From here we headed toward Riggs peak. See my trip report for Riggs peak for more.
RIGGS PEAK
--------------
If you don't have a 4x4 vehicle, it would be best to start this hike from Rustler park campground. There's a trailhead parking lot before the fee area with room for probably 20 cars. Another option would be to camp at Rustler park and that would shorten the hike by 1/2 mile or more round trip. The slope is less steep on the North side, but we decided to summit from the South side which was not a problem at all.
From the Crest trail we followed the South ridgeline straight up. There weren't many trees on the hike up. It was mainly an open grassy area. On the way up we saw a few flat areas which could have been old roads that crossed East/West. At the summit of Riggs there were scattered pines and some open areas. We found a registry at the high point which was started in June 2024 and had 5 groups of hikers since that time. We were the 6th group to sign it.
Since we parked at the Long Park trailhead at the end of FSR 42-D, we decided to try to descend off the East side of the peak. The slope was pretty gradual for the 1st quarter mile. After that quarter mile, we noticed an old overgrown road which could have been used for logging or possibly fire fighting. The road took us North and then switched back going South toward the Long Park trailhead. Some part of the road had deadfall & debris, but we were able to go around it.
Stats:
-------
Distance (round trip): 5.2 miles
AEG: 1,289 feet
Strava moving time: 2 hrs 32 mins
Strava elapsed time: 4 hrs 18 mins
Driving directions:
--------------------
Follow Google to Rustler Park Campground
1192 W Saddle View Rd, Douglas, AZ 85607
If you have a 4x4 vehicle you can continue on FSR 42-D for 1 mile to just below Bootlegger saddle or 1.5 miles to the end of the road where there's a private dispersed camping area. This whole area is called Long Park. There is a nice trail from this area that connects to Crest Trail #270, which is unofficially called the Long Park spur trail. |
