| no partners | | Incredible mountain, from the trailhead Avalanche Gulch rears up right in your face but is supposedly one of the best "introductory" mountaineering routes anywhere. Made it up to Helen Lake in reasonably good shape and set up my first ever snow camp. Hard freeze overnight, slept poorly. Standard 3AM start cramponing up to the Red Banks by headlamp it soon became clear that the summit, just 2mi but 4000' above, might as well be on another planet. I've hiked up a fair number of peaks but this was a whole new kind of steep. If this is an introductory route then I probably don't have much of a future as a mountaineer, but what an awesome mountain. |
