Hiking from Peeley TH it's about 9 miles to Bear Spring our campspot and base camp for the event. Arrived in the early afternoon and went to get water after setting up camp. We had a rattlesnake at the spring but it never moved while we filtered water.
After a pleasant evening next morning it was time to work. We split up into three groups with one group cutting and clearing tree fall while the rest of us focused on brushing the areas 2 miles south of Bear Spring. We all met back at camp around 330 for another night at Bear Spring.
Next day I had to hike out and one other volunteer joined me. The rest of the group was staying another night and continuing tree clearing and brushing. My goal in addition to hiking out was to brush a section about 5 miles from the trailhead. Brushed the section for about 5 hours before hiking out about 3pm. Ran into several southbound AZT thru hikers while working and talked with them a bit. Arrived at the trailhead around 430 and then the long drive out from Peeley.
Nice weekend in the Mazatzal range with good temps...summer is over Great to get a lot of work done on this section of AZT |
