| no partners | | After visiting Music Mountain a couple of years ago, we decided to head back to Tortilla so that my partner could activate the unactivated SOTA summit on the peak. Had decided to follow the @jacobemerick trail there and then backtrack, having spotted the saddle as an appropriate place to leave the path when we did Music, rather than the earlier Indian Springs.
Got our Trooper and our friend's 4x4 down the road to Peter's Trail #105 Northern Terminus no problem and set off. Luckily someone had done some recent trail maintenance and the cat's claw–which are taller than me–were mostly off the path.
By the saddle, I was already behind my two companions, and by the time I reached the barbed-wire fence, significantly so. As I approached the first ridge, we decided by radio that they would go and complete the summit given time limitations, and I tried to bush whack a bit further towards it but am so painfully slow at bush whacking that I decided to head back. Interestingly, they found on their return that there's a path running from the barbed wire fence back to the saddle that meets Peter's trail higher up on the top of that section that is much easier and faster to navigate.
As I returned back on Peter's Trail I encountered a pair of hikers heading out, the only other people we saw all day. When I was about 600ft from the car, with my friends still descending from the summit, my path was blocked by a herd of cattle. I'm short and didn't fancy my chances too much, with bulls in the mix. Luckily, I'd watched Alone and adapted the "Hey Bear!" shout to "Hey Cow!" . Eventually, they stopped their huffing and splashing about, and after about 20 minutes of all this they'd moved far enough away for me to safely make it to my vehicle.
So, not the day I'd planned, but one to remember for sure... |
