As figured the forecast crept up to 92 degrees. Waking up it was clear skies. I slept in longer knowing I wouldn't be tackling any 16+ mile hikes today. Sleep rules, I gotta try it more often
At 10am I started with actual clouds. The spot forecast was actually correct. The second they drifted over AJ the heat wiped 'em out but hey I was in business in the wilderness! There was about five cars at the TH likely due to the low temps.
The beginning of the hike was phenomenal with the clouds rolling over. The foliage combined with the dacite cliffs in various lighting was breath taking. I sometimes forget the first half mile is a world class hike. I must have lollygagged for an hour in the bliss. Moving on the clouds didn't hold overhead. They were near and taunting joy. Then I got the whiff. That Superstition spring breeze whiff. At this point I wasn't really hiking anymore. Rather dragged into the wilderness by uncontrollable force. Near the saddle I really got a new appreciation for the multi colored tuff. I peeked at Weaver and headed back down.
Finishing the hike I thought back noticing not once was I hot. I've done plenty of summer thunderstorm hiking in the Superstitions and a few umbrella hikes. This however was the first flat out pleasant summer hike I recall. You can't be greedy but dang it feels good to sneak one past the heat beast! |
