Just before arriving to the trailhead we passed Pete and Ken. I didn't know I was in the presence of the legend desert-boonie65 at the time. As luck would have it we never passed again.
Albeit cold we warmed up quick once on trail. The pants (like I've ever need 'em) came off quick. The jacket was soon to follow. Turning into the true Inner Basin the ground was noticeably frozen yet free of snow. Further on four foot drifts on the left of the trail tapered down to nothing on the right making for easy passage. Right were the trail makes an abrupt left to the switchbacks up to Weatherford it faded into snow. I scouted up a hundred feet and could easily see tracks forging straight up. However being steep and without minimal trekking poles it was unsafe in my opinion.
We turned around and passed Pete immediately. Heading down Janelle was enthralled in the bright green baby aspen leaves contrasting against the deep blue sky. Nearing the trailhead I was getting unrealistically tired from the previous day and thankful we had to turn around.
All in all a nice two day adventure from the frying pan to Olympic swimming to freezing to snowed out. |
